Review of Bellies to the Sky
Bellies to the Sky by Colleen Canning is a book designed for children's bedtime. So many children resist bedtime. They want the fun of evening play to continue. Storytime before bed is a great way to slow down. This book is perfect for that activity. Each section of this book takes a child through breath exercises designed to enhance health and encourage a calm and quiet atmosphere.
The artwork featured on the cover of this book is lovely. The relaxing colors work nicely to illustrate a cozy scene of children and animals ready for sleep. Including animals such as a horse, a deer, and a tiger makes the cover unique. The typography enhances the exterior and adds to the soothing effect.
What I liked best about this book is the process that happens as the book is read. Each page features another step and a coordinating illustration. This style of writing works perfectly and seems to be highly effective. I enjoyed the process of relaxation as I followed each step. Children will love following along with this interactive bedtime story.
It is apparent in the way this text instructs readers that this author is knowledgeable. The breathing exercises help bring the body and mind into a calm and restful place. The frequent use of these methods over time can cause better overall health and help establish a good sleep routine.
The illustrations by Allie Daigle are superb. The paintings transport a reader's imagination to wonderful destinations such as the Serengeti and the Arctic. The restful quality of each scene is paired with the story's text and instructions. The deep shades of coloring create a dreamy quality that suits the purpose of this book. The blues of the night sky and the brightness of the stars puts readers in the mood to rest.
This book is designed to speak to the inner child in all of us. I enjoyed reading it several times. I found no negatives to list. The book is exceptionally well edited. It is easy to read and free of errors. For these reasons, it has achieved a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It will appeal most to readers who enjoy calming bedtime stories. I recommend it to parents who like to read stories to young children before bedtime. I can't think of anyone to whom it would not appeal in some fashion.
