Farm life is often interesting and full of activity. Even animals are included in the flurry of activity on farmlands. Tales From the Coop by Sara Ayres is a children's book that relates tales about farm life from a spider's viewpoint.

Charley is a spider who lives on the farm. He has some close spider friends on the farm with whom he shares correspondence. They include Beatrice, Sally, and Roberta. Occasionally, he ventures out of his web to move around the farm. This book contains Charley's many letters written to his friends. The letters are quite interesting and informative. In a letter on page 34, Charley writes, "I expect to have lots of chicken poop to attract tasty bugs to catch once the chickens move in and endless amusement with the silly hens and roosters. The humans just received their 18 cute little yellow fluff-balls that will soon grow into my new neighbors."

I had a great time reading through Charley's many letters. His varied interests include chickens, bugs, tomatoes, pumpkins, cooking, planting, and many more. On page 91, Charley writes about his observations of how chickens interact amongst themselves and also how the heat in the coop affects him. He writes about the pecking order among chickens, how the cocks struggle for dominance, and mentions their love for bugs.

My favorite feature of this book is the conversational tone of the letters. The author made such a success of this that it felt as if I was having a real conversation with the spider and the other characters. I also love the fact that much of the information found in Charley's letters are proven facts.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was professionally edited. I have no dislikes about it. Some of the letters were nothing short of comical. An example of this is when Charley grumbled about the beetles that would plow through his web, dashing his hopes of catching a tasty bug for lunch. Readers who love reading tales about animals will find this book fantastic.
