Teaching children about the value of cultivating solid friendships and healthy thoughts cannot be overemphasized. However, this can be a daunting task. Oliver the Oyster and the Cheerless Clam by J. B. Auchter teaches these vital lessons.

This book of 127 pages begins with the tale of Clara the clam, who had an early start in the day in order to enjoy the delights of the sea. However, there is a pressing source of pain that stood in the way of Clara's happiness. Unexpectedly, Clara's friend, Cathy the crab, showed up and suggested that they swim around the harbor. The book goes on to relate the details of their adventurous journey and how they met other interesting characters like Oliver, Miriah, Hailey, and Tim. It is of interest to note that although each of the characters has had to endure difficult times, they found solace and strength in the loving friendships they've cultivated. Oliver and Miriah also went out of their way to do something special for Cathy.

I had a good time reading about the interesting adventures in the story. The descriptive narrative made the sea come alive. The book contained interesting facts about horseshoe crabs, fiddler crabs, boats, trains, estuaries, and others.

I particularly love the moral being taught by the story. Children can easily deduce that being friendly entails showing personal interest in others, giving of our time, and much more.

My favorite part of this book is on page 74, which shares interesting facts about fiddler crabs. Children can also learn much about the creatures in the story. Also, the bright and colorful illustrations in the book are noteworthy. They are quite fascinating.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is exceptionally well edited. The story was well developed and simple enough for kids. Children between the ages of 6 to 10 years of age will find this book interesting.

The book's cover drew my interest. I loved how the book included some moral lessons for the kids to remember. This appears to be a book worth reading.
