Review of The ABCs of Trees
The ABCs of Trees is a short educational piece about trees, such as their types, mode of food production, relationships with other organisms like insects, methods of maintenance like mulching, and many others, including creative additives like "Planta."
Scott A. Zanon holds academic qualifications in agronomy and horticulture. I appreciate him for putting his wealth of experience in these fields into a simple piece that not only educates children about what they need to know about trees but also encourages them to contribute to making the planet Earth "greener" and more livable.
I was impressed by how Scott arranged this book. As indicated in the book's title, the exercise runs from A to Z. It was interesting reading about the variety of knowledge about trees passed down to children through each of the letters. Also, it's commendable that the exercise is organised in a simple and fun manner.
Moreso, I liked that the author went on to explain each of the concepts represented by each letter. Here, we are not being presented with the usual "A is for Apple!" The author takes a step further to explain what that "apple" (for example) is. For example, Scott represented the letter C for "chlorophyll" and went on to explain its function in the process of photosynthesis.
Each letter of the alphabet and the first letter of the word representing it are bolded, and that was great. It helps with recognition and emphasis, aiding in smooth reading and easier comprehension of the book. The accompanying illustrations are wonderful and give children a clue as to what is being talked about, as can be seen in the painting of "xylem" on page 27.
With just one grammatical error, I think this book was professionally edited, and based on the aforementioned positive aspects, I am delighted to rate it five out of five stars. There is no reason to rate this book lower because I didn't dislike anything in it. I recommend The ABCs of Trees to readers between three and nine years old.
