Review of Kingdom of Grace
King Danilo had a big problem. His kingdom was facing a drought, and his heart felt heavy. He prayed and tried to find the source of his despair. To cheer him up, his wife, Queen Sky, threw a party. Queen Grace, a royal in charge of another kingdom, was a recipient of the invitation to the party. She was initially reluctant to attend because she felt the same emptiness as King Danilo. Ultimately, she decided to attend, and something truly unexpected happened. Read Kingdom of Grace by KMWilkerson to find out what happened and if it solved their problems or created more.
This story was detailed and unique for a picture book. I liked how it dove into the backstory of Queen Grace and gave insight into her thought process. It helped me understand where she was coming from. There are religious elements in this book, but no specific religion is mentioned. It said that the king prayed to his God, and Queen Grace had a high priestess who gave her advice, but the book seemed intentionally vague in regards to religion to not be exclusionary.
Unfortunately, there was one big drawback to the book. The ending is quite abrupt. I turned the last page expecting there to be more, but that was it. I felt it left a lot of questions unanswered. There was no explanation for a mysterious critical event that changed the course of the story. The book almost felt like the first chapter in a chapter book due to the lack of resolution. Perhaps the author is planning a second book and making this into a series, but this book alone left me unsatisfied.
The book was well-edited, and the illustrations were nice. I give Kingdom of Grace a rating of 3 out of 5 stars. The conflict was so unresolved that it left me wondering what I just read. I feel that if the author added a few more pages to wrap up the story at the end, it could be a great book.
This book would appeal to children who enjoy stories about royalty and magic. I believe it is geared toward lower elementary-age children due to the frequent pictures and long paragraphs. Younger children would have a hard time staying focused on that much text, and older children would probably want a longer book. Check out Kingdom of Grace by KMWilkerson to read this royal tale.
