The period of the Covid-19 virus and isolation was not easy for anyone, especially children. Most children were in their homes, listening to classes online, and separated from their friends. Such a situation can be serious in the long term.

Cassie's Big Change by Tamera Foley, Ph.D., is a book that follows a girl named Cassie who returns to school after a long period of the Covid-19 epidemic. Cassie is happy and excited to return to school because she will finally see her friends and teachers. Also, what makes Cassie extra delighted after returning to school are various new projects. One of the new tasks that the students have to do is to create a playdough figure in Art class, which must represent a character from the book they are reading with their other teacher. In addition, the children must also write a short story about the figurine they are making in Art class.

This short children's picture book is ideal literature for returning to school after the epidemic. I like the way the author emphasizes the importance of physically attending classes. Although virtual classes were wonderful for many, nothing could replace the proximity of teachers and friends. Also, I like how the teachers in the book are approachable and always ready to help their students, even face to face, to each student individually. It is very important that every student feels valued and not afraid to ask anything. In addition, I like how the assignments the children had were connected to different classes. Furthermore, the illustrations in the book are very vibrant and perfectly accompany the entire story.

There is not much in the book that I did not like. However, I think that the author focused too much on the details and on explaining the tasks that the students had to do. Those extensive descriptions and explanations were a bit tiring for me. Also, although the illustrations have gorgeous bright colors, I wish they were a bit more diverse and creative in their style. On the other hand, I have to praise the quality of the editing because I didn't come across a single error, so the book seems to be exceptionally well edited.

Taking all factors into account, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. The reason for the slightly lower rating refers to the negative aspects already mentioned in the previous paragraph. I would recommend this book primarily to children in lower elementary school who couldn't wait to return to school after the epidemic and long periods of isolation in their homes.
