The Butterfly And The Bear by Walter Lotocky is a cute poem about the beginning of an unusual friendship between a small, colorful butterfly and a big, brown bear. The bear is used to lazily moving through his days alone until he is visited by a beautiful butterfly who teaches him how much fun it is to move through life with a friend.

The story was extremely wholesome and adorable, and the rhyme scheme made it fun to follow. I also thought that the concept was cute. If I were still a child, it would have made me wonder if all bears that were chasing butterflies were actually friends with them. In my case, at least, the author did a good job of provoking childlike wonder with this work.

The art style was simple but beautiful, portraying clearly to the reader the setting of a mountainside meadow without being overly complicated or lost in detail. For example, I thought it was easy to read the emotions and expressions of the bear despite the fact that he did not have many facial details at all, which was impressive to me.

My only complaint is that I wish the story was a bit longer. I know that it was originally a poem, so the fact that it was on the shorter side makes sense. However, I wish they would have expanded a bit on the friendship story of the pair more once it was adapted to a book format. I would have liked to see some of the adventures the two of them had together after their initial meeting.

I rate this book four out of five stars. It is a short but sweet tale that I would enjoy reading to any of the small children in my life. I especially recommend it for children who like poems or stories that rhyme.
