Review of Will's Adventure to the Candy Mountain
Dr. Gerry Haller has written a children's book titled Will's Adventure to the Candy Mountain. After hearing about Candy Mountain from his grandmother, a young boy named Will dreams that he is on a train headed to the town of Candy Ville. Read this book to tag along on Will's journey to find new friends and exciting adventures.
Both the story and the beautiful illustrations in this book will inspire your child's creativity. A child's attention would be held by the vivid colours and attention to detail in the illustrations. They looked like they had been coloured with pencils, and they complemented the story beautifully.
In the story, Will appeared to have arrived at Candy Mountain after what seemed like an excessive amount of time had passed. As an alternative to using everyday things, this book would have been ideal for a scene in which Will drives through clouds of cotton candy and unicorns grazing on the way to Candy Mountain. Instead of using a thrilling dream to inspire the reader and spark their creativity, they show a child a sight that might upset them right before bed while on the train. The illustration of finally seeing the Candy Ville sign was rather bland and anticlimactic in comparison to the other illustrations. Even with the accompanying description of "sparkling white," a sign can be made more noticeable by not using a white background.
Except for the sign for Candy Town, I thought the illustrations were fantastic. The illustrator put in a lot of time and effort to make them complement the story perfectly. Once Will stepped through the gate, I was hooked on the book and wished it would never end so I could read more about Will and Quinn's adventures. I appreciated that the book encouraged its readers to find the silver lining in adversity and to practise good manners.
Based on my enjoyment of the story and the quality of the illustrations, I give this book 4 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to parents with young children. In addition, it will encourage them to let their imaginations run wild. When a kid hears Candy Mountain but sees dark and gloomy things on the way to an exciting place, they might get bored with the story. I believe this book has been edited professionally, as I only found one possible error.
As a result of its length and content, which may be too detailed for four-year-olds, I would suggest this book to readers aged five to ten. Also, I think kids who enjoyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would enjoy this book. It brought back memories of that book, but in its own way, it was an entirely different experience.
