“A Tale of the Legendary King and His Twin Princesses” by Genevieve Sarpong is a short story for children about a King and Queen and their twin daughters. Genevieve’s eight-year-old daughter illustrates the book.
The theme of this story teaches a child that good comes of good. When you do one good turn, one will come back to you. The story begins with a young boy who works his way to the throne by defending his land and the honor of his people. His brother wishes him ill. Unfortunately, the new King is unable to obtain an heir. This causes his reign to be in danger. Because of the kindness of their hearts to those about them, twins were granted to them. The king receives a challenge to fulfill, in order to protect the lovely young princesses and the valuable gifts bestowed on them.
I like the way that good values are taught in this story. Those in the highest of royal station do not look down on the lowliest of the poor. Because of this, their lives are bright and full of peace. Those who wish them harm come to harm themselves.
The shortness of the story makes it easy for children to stay interested the whole way to the end. It’s not overly wordy, but makes good use of words to convey deeper meanings. This story would be most appropriate for children between the ages of 4 and 12. It’s simple enough that a 4 year old can enjoy the adventure, and yet the content is stirring enough to capture an older child. Some of the lessons are not clearly spelled out, and the older child could be taught how to read between the lines for better reading comprehension. Having illustrations drawn by a child lends interest to a young audience.
This story may be best when read by an adult, especially to smaller children. Because of the setting of the story, some of the names and places would be difficult for a young reader to pronounce without assistance. Perhaps a page of name pronunciations would make this story more attainable to the young reader. However, it’s a good teaching device to introduce other cultures and languages.
I enjoyed this story, and believe that the author is a good storyteller with a good goal in writing. She wanted to pass down the tradition of storytelling as a way to educate children and teach them good values. She accomplished that in this book. I give her story 4 out of 4 stars.
