Fairy Senses Series by Emily Martha Sorensen
Book #1, Fairy Eyeglasses:
An adorable fairy book for younger readers
Cassie finds a pair of glasses that allows her to see fairies. They seem to have a message for her, and she needs to figure it out what that message is. For middle grade readers who enjoy a simple fantasy story with fairies that is easy to relate to -- I know, right? A fantasy story to relate to? With fairies? Trust me on this one, and young readers will love this book if they like fairies. It's a relatively quick read with a simple plot but also some education information thrown in there as well. Light fairy mythology is included but doesn't drag down the story. Lots of room to continue with a series expanding the tales or jumping over to other characters. Another well done book from Emily Martha Sorensen.
Book #2, Fairy Compass:
Another adorable fairy book for young readers!
In this second installment of the series, we get to follow Daisy, Cassie’s friend who doesn’t seem to have a lot going her way. Her sisters get all of the attention, her mom is always working, and she doesn’t have the cool ability to see fairies like Cassie does. But then Daisy finds a compass that doesn’t exactly point north. When she touches it, she can see blue blurs, pointing her toward the fairies! But why?
Once again, this series is super cute and a great, fast-paces that young readers will love. I didn’t double-check that all of the cool facts presented in the story are indeed correct, but there is a lot of academic information about magnets and how compasses work. I learned all kinds of cool stuff about birds seeing electromagnetic fields that I’d never even heard before – and from a children’s book, no less! There weren’t so many fairies in this book, and the ending was a little vague, but I suspect that it is just going to set us up for what is to come in the next book. I can’t wait!
Book #, Fairy Earmuffs:
This might just be my favorite in the Fairy Senses series yet! They just keep getting better and better. This time we get to follow Amanda, who was mentioned briefly in the previous book as Daisy's classmate who is always slow to do everything. Amanda is such a deep character, and there is so much going on with her. I feel like an entire series could be written about her alone without even having anything do with this fairy world. Like I said, she's a bit slow and has trouble keeping up with her peers -- there is also some implications that she has OCD and must follow certain routines. But then Amanda finds a pair of earmuffs that allow her to hear fairies! Amanda's ability to hear the fairies is extra special, with some hidden depth to it, as her uncle is Deaf, though it is never explicitly stated so within the text -- I love how it is just mentioned that they have to touch him to get his attention before talking to him or else he can't understand them. Not making a big deal about things that some people might consider out of the ordinary is such an awesome thing to see in children's books!
Once again, I am so excited to have been given a chance to read and review this book. I can't recommend this series enough to young readers. This time we get an even further look into the fairy world, and things are beginning to tie in to Cassie's and Daisy's earlier stories. I can't wait to see what is in store for us next!
