Will is a middle grade kid who hates attending school,he considers his worst days to be those spent at school. Amongst his list of dislikes include showering using a shampoo and soap, but his worst moments would be having to ride on the rocket propelled school bus being strapped next to Gertrude who would not miss any chance to report will to Ms. Early, their teacher. In fact Gertrude has been nick named 'Intrude' because she likes to tell on everyone.
Will of the Hill by Marshall Cobb depicts the experiences of Will and his fellow 5th grade kids going to a school situated at the top of a hill, whose existence is suspicious. The school bus is said to use rocket engines in order to get it to go up this mysterious hill. The children have to be strapped using five fasteners when going to school. During one of these rides to school,Gertrude tells Will that she knows about his secret stash of comic books. Comic books are not allowed in the school yet Will has a huge stash hidden in a hedge at the school compound. She therefore threatens to expose Will unless he convinces Dillon to attend her birthday. Dillon is Will's best friend, who seems to be everyone's favorite at school. When Will is blackmailed by Gertrude,he goes to Dillon for help and this leads to a series of events that end up in what would have been the greatest birthday party being a nightmare.
I found this book to be quite interesting, right from the first page. It was a quick and easy read for me since the author has written with much consideration to the younger audience. I was captivated by every event such that I could not put the book down. The creativity employed by the writer in describing the events of the story, and the characters is quite commendable. Every character is well developed, the chapters flow well to put together an interesting book.
What I liked most is the way the adult characters were given adult roles such that there's a clear distinction between how kids behave and how adults behave. I especially enjoyed Ms. Early as a teacher, she comes across as one who understands her job well especially the manner in which she handles the kids at school. My concern was that the hill lacked a name and its origin has been kept mysterious. I hope that in the next book,Will of the Hill:Up, up and around, the author will shade more light on this.
The editors did a great job since I couldn't find any errors, I therefore rate Will of the Hill By Marshall Cobb 4 out of 4 stars. This book is suitable for all audiences, there are relevant lessons to guide kids as well as a good portion of entertainment. It reminded me of the times in school and some of the mischief one would try just for fun without thinking about how much trouble you would be in.
