Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is the latest in the Inca mystery series by R.F. Kristi. World famous cat-detective Inca and her brothers and sisters are very excited! They are all going to South Korea. Missy, their humanoid Mom, has been invited as a judge for the Le Cordon Bleu's patisserie competition being held at the demilitarized zone, or DMZ, between North and South Korea. Fromage, Inca's brother, and the resident cheese expert is particularly pleased because Missy will also be debuting her new special cheese at the competition. To their delight, Solo, their humanoid detective friend, and his dog Terrance also decide to join them on the trip. The only dark cloud on the whole trip is the presence of Enzo, a rival chef out to sabotage Mom's cheese.
They are enthralled by the beauty and culture of Korea and the hospitality of its people. They become very friendly with their guide Ye-Jun and are invited to live with him at his home. At the competition, they discover that Ye-Jun's long separated sister, who lives in North Korea is also a contestant. Brother and sister desperately wish to be reunited and are willing to go to any length to make that happen. Inca overhears Solo also promising all his help in such an effort. Inca and her friends put their heads together to work out a hilarious solution to reunite families and keep their human friends from doing anything illegal.
This book is a humorous, enjoyable and educational read with fantastic illustrations. As with all her books, R.F. Kristi provides the reader a chance to travel and see the beauty of a new country, in this case, South Korea, through the eyes of Inca and her friends. Some incidents in the story stand out. The image of little Siberian cat Inca standing and posing in front of the painting of the majestic Siberian tiger had me in splits. I also enjoyed the newly developing relationship between Missy and Solo. Most importantly, the book beautifully brings out that boundaries are usually man-made - one cannot divide hearts and families or the love and bond between a sister and brother.
The book is beautifully written and well edited. I give this book 4 out of 4 stars and recommend it to anyone looking to introduce their children to an educational and enjoyable reading experience. Mysteries, new countries and a gang of animal detectives are sure to make this book an interesting read for children of ages 8 to 12 years.
