Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R. F. Kristi is a cute children’s story about a cat, Inca, who has her own detective agency. Together with her friends, she works to solve crimes.
In this book, Inca and her family are on vacation in Sri Lanka when they come across the news that an antique sword has been stolen. Inca’s friends, dog Terrance and human Solo, come to visit. Solo is a detective who solves crimes and came to help find out who stole the sword. Inca and her friends, both old and new friends she meets along the way, work together to try to find the stolen sword and solve the crime.
I thought this book was well-written. It was an enjoyable read that I cannot wait to share with my niece as she loves cats. It has adventure and mystery, but is not too intense for young readers. Everything is explained thoroughly in the book for children who might not have heard of a particular word or phrase.
What I liked most about this book was the illustrations. They were very well done and added to the story. I also liked the interactions of the animals with each other. They were interacting with different species which subtly teaches kids about diversity. There were other lessons in the book as well that were cleverly integrated into the storyline. What I liked least about this book was that the detective piece started slowly. I felt I was through a significant portion of the book, and there was only minimal reference given to the mystery. I would like to have seen this addressed more in early chapters, even if it was just a reference to Inca sneaking around to check things out.
Overall, I highly recommend this book for young children. The author states that it is written for children 7-12, but niece is 5 years old, and I think that should would like it. It could not be read all at once with her, but in addition to the chapters, there are breaks written within each chapter separating the different times of the day. There is one scene with a snake that might be too scary for very young children (under 5).
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It appears to be professionally proofread. I found only one grammatical error and one formatting error.
