Farmer Beau's Farm by Kathleen Geiger is a book with a lesson in mind. That lesson is that, although we have differences, we can all learn to get along and enjoy one another. Farmer Beau and Bamma enjoyed sitting together on their porch and watching their cats play. They were sad that the cats began leaving home, so they made a house for the last one (Kailey) in hopes she would stay. Kailey finds out when she makes friends with a blue bunny named Sammy, that friends can be different and still have a great friendship. Kailey and Sammy are happy until one day, someone new and unexpected comes to the farm. Will their farm be the same? Will this new addition fit in with them? What will people say?
Wonderfully descriptive, this author's writing paints the rural lifestyle of farm living. The fields of corn and soybeans are the perfect farm setting for this story about cats, a rabbit, and other characters. This setting is what I loved the most about the book. Character development is great. It's easy to believe the friends care about one another after reading about their activities together each day.
The cover for this book is perfect for the story inside. The colors are beautiful, in shades of pastel, and impart a calming impression, almost serene. I liked the contrasting effect of the fir tree and the cornfield in the background. These elements demonstrate that the cover art is meant to reflect specific scenes in the book itself. I loved that attention to detail. I also liked that there is a "this book belongs to" section at the front of the book for the reader to inscribe their name. It encourages pride of ownership.
There is a lot of snuggling in this book, and kids will love that adorable aspect of it. Most kids love to snuggle. I feel that's it's possible there should have been a snuggle-alert on the cover (just kidding). It would be a perfect book with which children can relax. It's a quietly happy sort of tale, and is long enough to satisfy children that they didn't get cheated on bedtime story length!
My favorite part of this book, aside from the great premise, is the illustrations. They artistically illustrate the story for children, bringing scenes to life with bright, resounding colors. My favorite is the one of Kailey and Sammy watching the sunset together. I liked the idea the author shared in the blurb on the back of the cover. Creating stuffed animals of the characters of this book would be a great addition to the book. I can easily believe that a grandmother wrote this story for her grandchildren, and it is a sweet gesture that she dedicated it to her husband ("Beau") who passed on before the book was finished.
I could find nothing to dislike about this book. It's well written, and I feel it is a book that will grace a bookshelf with valid lessons for years after the first read. I am rating this book with 4 out of 4 stars. I found only a few minor errors, and I believe it will appeal to very young children as well as older ones. I recommend it especially to children aged 3-9 years. I also recommend it as a bedtime story for parents looking for new material to read to their kids. If you're looking for a story with a lot of adventure, this book might not appeal to you.
