Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula by R.F. Kristi is a fictional children’s book. It is the eighth book in the Inca Cat Detective Series but can be read as a standalone. There is a character list that is very helpful when identifying characters, especially if the other books in the series haven’t been read before. The troupe of cat detectives visit the Korean Peninsula with Mom (their owner). Mom creates a new cheese and is chosen to be a judge in a food contest by a renowned cooking school. The competition is held at the DMZ.

I love that this book is not just about an adventure or solving mysteries. It is about the importance of helping others. I find it so touching that the cats solve mysteries by uniting loved ones and finding out the truth. There are moments that can be a bit heavy for a children’s book, but of course the book doesn’t end that way. Nevertheless, it is well-layered.

I recommend that this book be read with an adult nearby or read together in case young readers have questions. There are a few vocabulary terms such as “ado”, “patisserie”, and “tarmac” that are not common. So, depending on their age, some may not know these words. However, I believe this could be a valuable vocabulary lesson.

I love cats, so I think that other cat-lovers will also enjoy this book. This is also a good read if you are looking for an adventure. If you are interested in travel, this is definitely for you! Reading this book is like going on vacation, because it is so descriptive. The words and pictures of the Peace House, cherry blossoms, and the DMZ makes me want to visit the Korean Peninsula one day.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I did not find any errors so I think the book was professionally edited. The best part about the book are the colorful illustrations, which I can tell are original. The illustrations make the story engaging and enjoyable. It will make young readers expand their imaginations. They’ll feel like they’re a part of the Cat Detective crew!
