Mariyah's First Day of School by Regina N. Rudolph is a book geared toward young, school-age children. As you can tell from the title, it is based on a child's first day of school. This book is the first in a series of books written by this author. The series is designed to guide children through the early stages of childhood during the first years of school. The story begins with its main character (Mariyah) making preparations on the night before school starts. She has to plan what to wear in the morning because it's the first day of school! On the big day, Mariyah is excited! Will she make new friends? You'll have to read the book to find out!

The cover of this book goes well with the story and will appeal to kids. It shows Mariyah and her mother walking to school, and it places the schoolhouse itself in a central location in the background. The colors are bright and vivid, and the expression on the faces of Mariyah and her mother seem cheerful. The cheerfulness is essential for kids who might be nervous about their first day of school. The text font was placed well and suited the book.

I liked the illustrations in this book. The way each picture illustrates the page telling its story works well. It helps kids visualize each event as it takes place. The bright colors and happy expressions make this book a positive experience for kids getting ready for their first day of school.

The character development in this book is excellent for such a brief story. I enjoyed the conversations between Mariyah and her mother. It was easy to tell that Mariyah was a happy child. The dialogue is entertaining and easy for kids to follow. It communicates Mariyah's excitement and anticipation of her first day of school. The pleasure of wearing new clothes is very prevalent for kids on the first day of school, and this book demonstrates that from the beginning.

I liked that the book highlighted the importance of a good breakfast for kids. It shows that the author put some thought into the lessons this book offers children. I was impressed with the way the author's style of writing focused on the positive things about the first day of school. It mentioned all the good things that come with getting ready for the big day, and that is what I liked most about this book. Kids can be very nervous about the first day of school, so it's good that the author took that into account when writing this story.

I noticed the illustration for the page that tells about Mariyah sitting at a table with three other children shows each child sitting at a separate desk instead. Children see these types of details as well. The only reason I comment on it is that all of the other illustrations matched the text so beautifully.

This book will appeal the most to young kids who look forward to attending school someday. It may not appeal to older children, as it is written with a younger age-group in mind.

I couldn't find anything to dislike about this book. Its presentation of a subject as important as the first day of school is excellent for children to read about, and kids will enjoy its message of positive reinforcement. Although I did find a few minor errors, it seems well-edited. For these reasons, I am rating this book with 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to children nearing school-age, as well as those who are younger. Even children who are too young to read would enjoy this book as the illustrations tell the story so beautifully. I also recommend it to parents who have a child who is nervous about attending school for the first time.

I like the cover; it's very bright and would appeal to children. The topic is one of concern to many starting school. All in all, it sounds great for that age group. I am not, though, so I don't think I'll read it. Thanks.
