Review by Florence Nalianya -- Serendipity Mystery: Diar...
Children get extremely happy whenever its vacation time. They know it’s time to do plenty of snacks, make friends and have fun around the beach. But wait, what is this feeling that one experiences when something comes up and interferes with this wonderful moment? This feeling is loathsome and I could best explain it when I was a child. Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi gives a story with such an experience.
A family of detective cats namely; Inca, Cara, Fromage, and Charlotte (their intelligent hamster) are taken by their Mom on vacation in Sri Lanka. They rent a beach house in a village known as Galle. The cats get to enjoy their stay on the beach and make new friends. While Mom was also having a good time and reading a newspaper on the beach, she discovered that someone had stolen a special sword from the Colombo Museum. Inca the head of the Inca detective company gets excited by the news and wishes to exploit his detective skills to help recover the sword. Terrace the dog and Polo the master( who are part of the Inca detective company) gets on their way to Sri Lanka to help investigate the incident. While playing on the beach, the cats find hints that will help solve the mystery and recover the stolen items. Will the team rely on this hint or will each have independent views? Who will hit the jackpot by finding out the truth?
I liked everything about this book. Kristi has used very beautiful and vibrant pictorials to help children digest more and get distracted from boredom. This is one thing that I fancy about children's books. Kristi has helped her audience understand every character without much struggle. The inclusion of beautiful historical places in the story is a plus for Kristi as an author for it paves way for those who are searching for such places to visit.
I found almost nothing to dislike about this book apart from the incident when Inca is ambushed by a python in the forest. I felt like this would cause a slight scare to the youngest audience especially those at the age of five. All in all, this doesn’t take away any credit from this book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I found only one grammatical error. This book is therefore professionally edited. I recommend this book to all children between the age of 5-10 and to parents of young children who like to read an enjoyable story to their children.
