Official Review: Ian and Igor Inquisitive Island Iguanas
Ian and Igor Inquisitive Island Iguanas by Chloricia Lake Myers is a fully illustrated children’s book. Iguanas Ian and Igor are brothers. They live on a tropical island. As they watch the pelicans catch fish in their big “fleshy bills,” they realize they are hungry and go looking for something to eat. The two brothers have different personalities. Ian gets into trouble often, and Igor, being the older brother, seems to warn Ian of impending dangers only having to help him in the end.
Children can learn things about iguanas in this fun story. What are the skin folds under their necks called? What do they eat? What are the vocabulary words for different environments found in nature?
The author has added six double-sided pages of activities in the back of the book for further learning opportunities. Though this book is written for seven to eleven-year-olds, children may need help from a teacher or parent to do some of the written activities. Some of the activities involve learning different homophones, different sounds for the letter “I,” and synonyms for “said.” There are also reading comprehension questions and writing exercises for the cause and effect relationships that happened in the story.
I best liked the colorful illustrations done by Carron Lake. The pictures of Ian and Igor on an island matched the story and descriptions on each page. I liked that there were words in bold print, signifying that these may be new to young readers. These words were later used in a crossword puzzle matched to their definitions in the activity pages. I was disappointed; however, that “guineps” was in bold print but not used in the crossword puzzle. There was not any picture or definition for this word in the book. I least liked that the activity pages, except for the crossword puzzle, did not have any answer keys. I think the answer keys could be added upside down and put in very fine print at the end of the book.
I rate Ian and Igor Inquisitive Island Iguanas by Chloricia Lake Myers 4 out of 4 stars. The book was edited well, as I only found two errors in the activity pages. The book is delightful to read and to learn about iguanas in an island’s environment. The illustrations are colorful and meaningful, adding to the enjoyment of the story. Young children would like this book the best because it is very short with pleasant-looking illustrations. They can learn new vocabulary and practice writing sentences in the activity pages. Parents and teachers would also like this book because it can help young readers to expand their vocabulary, reading, and writing skills.
