Official Review: Trees Are Majestic: A Salute to Arbor Day
Trees are Majestic: A Salute to Arbor Day by Hyacinth J. Burgess-Gregory is a children’s picture book about the wonder of trees. The book follows a young boy who expresses his love of trees. He shows how trees are different in each season, and eventually he plants a seed so he can see it grow from a tiny sprout to a tall, majestic tree.
I enjoyed how this book aimed to inspire kids to plant trees. As more and more trees are being cut down, it’s wonderful to think about children reading this book and trying to plant a seed like the boy in the story. Parents could use the book to teach children about the different types of trees and the seeds that can grow into trees.
Although I liked the spirit of this book, I think the actual writing could use some improvements. The story is written in rhyme, but the rhyme scheme is inconsistent. One page may include six lines with only the first two actually rhyming. On another page, lines three, four, and six might rhyme. This inconsistent rhyming made it difficult to read the book aloud, as I never knew which words and syllables should receive emphasis.
Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The story is fun and could inspire young readers to plant trees. The illustrations added to the story by showing the trees in each season. However, the rhyming could be more consistent, which would improve the experience of reading the book aloud.
I would recommend this book to parents of children ages four to nine, although beginning readers may need help with larger vocabulary words. The author also includes a list of vocabulary-building words in the back of the book, which parents could review with their kids. If you want to celebrate Arbor Day or teach your kids about the majesty of trees, this could be the book for you!
