My Cartoon Imagination at School by Sabrina D. Clayton is a children’s picture book about Samara, a young girl who is nervous about doing a presentation at school. Her mom suggests that she imagine all of the kids in her class as different cartoon animals while she presents. As she travels to school, Samara imagines each person she meets as a different cartoon animal, but will this be enough to help her overcome her fears in class? I really enjoyed this adorable book, and I think it would help kids face everyday problems. As someone who grew up with stage fright, I appreciated that this book offered different advice than the usual, “imagine them in their underwear,” which doesn’t work for so many people. I liked that the book showed Samara struggle even after she started using her mom’s advice. She was nervous when she stood up in front of the class, but eventually she managed to calm herself down by remembering what her mom told her.
The illustrations in this book also added to the fun, whimsical nature of the story. The pictures showed the people Samara saw and then showed them being transformed into the cartoon animals she imagined. This went along well with the first-person narration, as it helped me get in Samara’s head and understand her point of view.
My only complaint about this book is that the rhyming lines were inconsistent. It sometimes felt like the author tried to cram too many syllables into one line or added words at the end just to make the rhyme work.
Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed the whimsical illustrations and story, which could help kids overcome stage fright. I also appreciated that the book appeared to be professionally edited, as I only found one error. However, I think that reading it would have been more enjoyable if the rhyming were consistent. This would also make it a better choice for a bedtime story that parents could read out loud. I would recommend this book to parents of kids ages five to nine, though beginning readers may need assistance. If your kid is afraid of presenting at school, maybe cartoon animals can help them just like they helped Samara!
