The Blue Sea Monster Terrorizing Palm Beach by Norma Fleagane, James Fleagane, and Blake James Ward, is a fun, light-hearted romp following a grandfather and grandson as they look for lost children taken by a mysterious sea monster. The two work together around their home and beach to frighten away monsters, then they go on a fun rescue mission in a helicopter to look for the lost children.

I liked the fact that writing the book was clearly a family project. It was written in the style of a spoken, spur-of-the-moment story. It had a rather charming, meandering plotline. It wasn’t your classic book that follows a well-defined, from-point-A-to-point-B plot, but that simply adds to its gentle appeal. There were only two things I disliked about the book. First, there was far too much telling and not enough showing. Constantly reading, “Grandpa said,” “Blake said,” “Grandpa said,” was repetitive and boring. Secondly, the illustrations of the Blue Sea Monster did not match the book’s description of it. However, these things are small enough that it does not detract from the story.

The text was very clean and seemed carefully edited. There were only a few minor punctuation errors and one grammatical error. Colorful illustrations will keep both young listeners and beginning readers riveted and intrigued through the entire book.

This is a book young children will enjoy as it is a whimsical tale perfect for bedtime, and it is perfect for parents or grandparents who want to read something quick and easy to the child, instead of the boring, “Once upon a time, there once was a little girl/boy that didn’t want to go to bed. The end.” It’s a quick read with just enough suspense to keep the child interested without being scary.

There is no profanity or any other content not suitable for young ears. I am happy to give The Blue Sea Monster Terrorizing Palm Beach four out of four stars.

Blue Sea Monster, is a story on which kids may imagine and can create more thrilled ideas that can apply in a simple home activity while in a quarantine period.
