Rommie’s Journey by Marie Al is children’s picture book about a little caterpillar named Jerome, or Rommie for short. Rommie dreams of exploring the world, so he sets out on a journey by catching a ride on a floating leaf. When he gets hungry, he eats his leaf and finds himself falling to the ground. After a long journey, he hurts one of his legs. When he starts to wrap it in a leaf cast, he can’t stop and has soon wrapped his entire body up and fallen asleep. Will Rommie emerge with just a healed leg or will he find more changes in his little body when he wakes?

Rommie is an adorable little caterpillar who immediately captures the reader’s heart. Turner’s illustrations of Rommie in his tiny cargo pants made me want him to succeed on his journey from the first page. I often feel that the pictures in a children’s book can be its defining factor, and the illustrations in this book are definitely a big positive factor.

I also appreciated how the author added new characters to the story and included educational components. I won’t give details to avoid spoiling the plot, but the author adds a human perspective later in the story and explains some of the biological processes that go on in caterpillars’ lives. This explanation is at an appropriate level for the children this book is aimed at.

Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. Between the great illustrations, fun story, and educational elements, I couldn’t find anything to complain about in this book.

I would recommend this book to parents of kids ages four to nine. The rhyming lines would be fun for a parent to read out loud to their children, and the parent could also explain any complex vocabulary or biology they encounter while reading.

Illustrations are the major part of great children books as they readily deliver its message to its readers, kids. This book can also serve to teach children about biology of development should they want to understand the human body growth phases. Likening their bodies to an animal such as a caterpillar, I believe parents can better enlighten kids on how their body changes while they grow into adults.

Your review leaves readers in suspense moreso because of the rhetorical question that sums up Rommie's predicament.Beautiful one.
