What Does My Dog Jack Do at Night? by Adam Mock is a children’s picture book about a young boy with an imaginative mind. Each night before he goes to bed, he thinks about wild things like penguins surfing and robot horses flying planes. Out of all these silly thoughts, his favorite thing to imagine is what his dog, Jack, does at night while he’s asleep. Join this creative boy for a dip into his imagination, and you just might start wondering if your pets have as much fun at night as Jack does!

I really enjoyed this short, silly story. I think it could easily appeal to children who have great bonds with their pets. The rhyming lines add to the whimsy of the story. They have great rhythm, so I could see a parent reading this book out loud to their child. The vocabulary is pretty simple, so I also think this could be a fun book for an older child to read to their younger sibling, inspiring them to imagine together.

I don’t think it would be fair for me to complete this review without mentioning the great illustrations done by Segundo Garcia. He brings the boy’s thoughts to life in cartoon images of Jack doing everything his young owner imagines. I’m sure any child could see their dog in Jack’s place because the illustrations make it so easy for the reader to see what this little boy sees.

Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. From the fun writing to the adorable illustrations, I can’t find anything to complain about. The book looks very professional with no errors in the writing or formatting.

I would recommend this book to parents of kids ages four to six. Early readers may need help with a few challenging words like “robotic,” but more advanced readers should be able to tackle this book on their own. Regardless, children of all ages will be delighted by this book and should have their own minds opened to the unseen possibilities of the world around them.
