Why Inch Got a Foot is the second book in the 6 of 1/Half Doz of the Other series by Ron Roecker. In this story, readers follow the adventure of a curious inchworm, called Inch in the story, who wants to know more about the world. One day, she gets her chance when a shoe becomes stuck in the mud. Deciding to help the shoe, Inch pulls on it until it is suddenly released from the mud, sending Inch on a wild adventure. What does Inch see, and what does she learn?

This is a great children’s book for 5-8 year olds. It has good humor and funny moments in the illustrations and the text. One thing that Inch says is “by goody,” which made me smile every time I read it. I liked Inch’s character. From her decision to help get the shoe unstuck, she seems to be kind and helpful. She’s also very curious and courageous based on her desire to explore the world.

My favorite part of the book is the message it conveys about not letting fear stop you from getting out and experiencing the world. At one point in the book, Inch asks herself, “Is danger my fear or just the unknown?” before telling herself, “Unknown becomes known as soon as you meet!” This is a great lesson for children and adults.

The rhyming doesn’t follow a consistent rhyme scheme, and sometimes it doesn’t seem to rhyme at all. However, I was not bothered by this because the story does have really a nice rhyme-type flow that doesn’t feel forced. For the most part, the vocabulary works well for 5-8 year olds. There were a few words that may be confusing. For example, sitch was used instead of situation.

I liked the illustrations, which were also done by Ron Roecker. They were well drawn and showed what was happening in the story, perfect for kids to look at while being read to. Inch also had very clear expressions, which I liked.

Overall, this is a fun children’s book, and there was nothing I disliked about it. The book was also professionally edited, so I am happy to give it 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to any child who likes adventures and exploring. Children who like insects will especially like Inch’s character.

Who would have known that trying to see the world from an inchworm's point of view can actually reveal new things. I'm sure children will be able to relate with this story. Kudos to the author. Great review, you've also done a wonderful job.
