Life with Bryce by Blue Walls is a look into the life of an overweight boy named Bryce. His parents went through a rather nasty divorce, and they ignored his needs for a long time. Instead of caring for him, they gave him whatever he wanted. That resulted in him gaining a substantial amount of weight. Bryce’s weight made it hard for him to play games with the other kids his age. He had no friends and was not in a good situation. His mother finally noticed and realized she needed to step in and help her child.

The writing of this book was rather strange for a children’s book. Typically, the protagonist of a children’s book is about the same age or a bit older than the target audience. Bryce is a six-year-old in this book. However, the writing is too complicated for anyone of that age. I feel as though Walls should have simplified the language of the book. There were a lot of complex sentences throughout the book, and it did not read like a typical children’s book. For example, Walls utilized the semi-colon frequently. I think that is an odd choice for a children’s book because it is one of the least understood punctuation marks. The writing was my least favorite part of the book because it did not seem to fit the target audience.

The story itself was my favorite part. Seeing how Bryce faced difficulties could be inspiring to young readers. I think his character was also quite well written and dynamic. I also think the mother was a dynamic character. She had an excellent character arc.

The book could have used a bit more editing. There were several mistakes, and given the length of the book, it was a significant number. In addition, grammar is especially important for a children’s book because the audience is still learning proper grammar.

Overall, I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I do think the story was strong and could be beneficial to many. However, the grammatical errors and the complexity of the writing does not bode well to a successful children’s book. I think if the author were to do another round of editing and rewrite some to make the book simpler, this could be an impactful book. In its current state, I think it would be best to be read aloud to a younger child around the age of Bryce.

It's unfortunate that the book is riddled with grammatical mistakes, as the storyline itself sounds like it could be a rather interesting topic for children. Thanks for your review!

This sounds like an interesting book. This story of Bryce shows providing for the kids is as important as paying attention to them. Good review!
