Review by snowbear -- Cat Detectives in the Korean Penin...
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula by R.F. Kristi is a children's book with over 120 pages, detailing the adventures of Inca, a cat detective, along with her friends. In this book, the Inca and her friends go to the Korean Peninsula to accompany their human Mom who has been chosen to be one of the judges of a cooking competition held between South and North Korean chefs.
This was not the first book I've read from the Cat Detectives series, as I've also read another book about Inca's adventure in Sri Lanka. One of the things that I like about this book series and the author's writing is how she manages to make each book's adventures distinct from one another. There is a specific theme being highlighted in each book. In this particular book, the author connected North and South Korea through its story. It managed to show the grief and longing that someone from either side of the country is going through when they have loved ones on the other side that they can't go to. I like how it also explained the demilitarized zone, and how it was written in such a way that would still appeal to children, written in a simple yet striking manner.
The book also held some commentaries about the issue of the country being divided. It provided great insight into the separation of loved ones due to the conflict, as shown in the story of Bo-mi and Baram. The simple story mirrored what people living in the South and North of the country were feeling as they get split up with their loved ones.
You might think that the story is too heavy for a Children's book. Even though it discusses matters like these, the author has successfully managed to tell the story in a way that is easy to understand for the readers. She also added fun elements to the story to make it more enjoyable to read for children. Inca's character was very much full of curiosity, as children can sometimes be. There is also humor and the characterization is superb. I even found the illustrations adorable and some of them were funny.
For the points I have stated above, I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I'm really impressed with how the author has handled the topic and made it into a children's book story. It is difficult to depict heavy issues such as the ones discussed in the book, but the author managed to relay it successfully. The book is also thoroughly edited and does not contain any profane language. I would highly recommend this not only to children but also to parents who love reading to their kids. People who are not into reading children's book might not enjoy this so much since the writing style is simple and tailored to children.
