Going to receive medical care can be a scary thing for children, but Lavette Shirley Elee reassures young readers in her educational picture book, My Primary Care PA. The story is told from a young boy's perspective; he doesn't feel sick, so he doesn't understand why he must go. However, he tries to be brave and discovers that visiting the PA isn't so scary after all.

Elee does an excellent job of portraying the young boy's anxiety about his appointment with his PA and detailing each step of the visit. Children will learn about medical professions and also what to expect when they visit their primary care PA and MA. The book features colorful illustrations detailing the medical care that the boy receives. I particularly like that children of color will see themselves represented throughout the pages, which hasn't always been the case in the past.

In the synopsis, Elee notes her desire to introduce young readers to the PA career as well as alleviate any fears they might have about medical facilities. Elee effectively addresses both of these issues, but since it is an educational book, I would have liked to have seen the inclusion of the terms, physician assistant and medical assistant, in addition to their abbreviations.

The book contains several errors that would have been flagged by a professional editor. While three errors may seem minor in a two-hundred-page book, they stand out in a twenty-five-page picture book. Children's books need to model correct grammar and punctuation.

For all of the above reasons, I rate My Primary Care PA three out of four stars. Despite the need for further editing, the story will educate children and reassure their fears about receiving medical care. I recommend the book to young readers through the age of nine and family members who enjoy reading to little ones.

This book must be read by and to all the inquisitive little humans! They can be a handful at times and refuse to visit primary care institutions. Thanks for the review, I hope all the errors in the book will be corrected.

Thank you for your honest review! I agree that picture books about anything medical will be in great demand for children and families right now.

I completely agree with you that children's books should be free of grammatical and punctuation errors!

I understand the young boy's concern. He should understand that one must not be sick to visit the hospital anyway.

This sounds similar to another recent children's book regarding a PA visit (I'm glad they aren't just saying Doctor now!). However, since this sounds like it needs some editing, I would likely wait till a cleaner copy becomes available. Thanks for the review!
