[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Kitty and Kat - MiceQuest" by Robert Beals III.]
Kitty and Kat - MiceQuest is a short but adorable children’s book by Robert Beals III. Written in third person, it features the two titular cats, Kitty and Kat, as they embark on an adventure to look for some mice. Along the way, they meet various friends.
Their friends come in all shapes and sizes, from big bears by the sea to tiny frogs in the grass. They come from many different places, but have any of them seen the mice? Will they be able to help Kitty and Kat find what they are looking for?
My favourite part of the book has to be the gorgeous illustrations, which are bright and colourful. The illustrator has done a fantastic job illustrating outdoor scenery, making it look realistic and appealing so that children would be encouraged to go outdoors. I also like the diversity of the animals in the book – it’s a great way to introduce children to the various fauna which exist on our planet.
However, I did find one error with regards to the punctuation – which I find rather unacceptable, especially given how short the book is. In addition, while I enjoyed the rhyming and rhythm for most of the book, I found the use of the last literary device at the end to be a little forced and unnatural. In fact, the execution of the ending as a whole felt a little lacklustre – I understand that the break in the rhythm and rhyme could be intentional (perhaps due to the author’s desire to draw attention to the end), but I thought that it could’ve been done in a less jarring way. The ending did not leave a very strong impression on me, which I thought was a shame considering that the rest of the book was great.
Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars due to the factors mentioned above. I would recommend this book to be read by children under the age of 5 because of the relatively simple language used as well as the short length of the book.
