Review by Cazrichmond -- Love, Grandma by Ann Morris
A lovely children’s book, showing the benefits of children interacting with positive adult role models is, Love, Grandma. It is written by Ann Morris, who is a grandmother herself. Inspired by the love and happiness her grandchildren have given her, she dedicates it to them, showing how privileged she feels to have them in her life. The illustrations are by David Gnass and are a welcome addition.
Written in a rhyming style, this children’s book follows the activities of a grandmother spending quality time with her two grandchildren, Payton and Haley. The story begins with a description of the joy and happiness felt with the birth of grandchildren. The story continues, describing all the fun and games they experience together, including reading books, playing dress-up, baking and gymnastics. It is clear, all the moments spent together create very fond memories.
As the grandchildren get older and a little bigger, it is humorous to read how the grandmother tries to keep up with some of the children’s endeavours, such as gymnastics. Caught up with the fun, she soon remembers her age when she isn’t able to perform a backbend. With many giggles all round, she realises some things should be left for the children. These elements of the story are very relatable, and I think we have all been in similar situations when feeling youthful around young children.
The illustrations are very nice and colourful. Every part of the story is displayed by the artwork. This makes the book very appealing for children and helps visualise the story. It is also, a brilliant book for a child to read with an adult to create a positive interaction between family members. As well as the descriptive pictures, the language is simple and clear, making the book suitable for younger children.
I liked the family activities described, including gardening, experiencing nature and feeding birds. This is a significant activity to introduce to children in order to teach them about the importance of nature and how we can protect it. Another wonderful, sentimental activity described, was a crafting activity, where the children play with buttons that belonged to their great grandmother. The family tradition is heartwarming, as it brings joy to the grandchildren and happy memories for their grandmother.
This is a delightful children’s story and I rate it 4 out of 4 stars, as I couldn’t find anything to dislike about it. The book focuses on positive family interactions with children and compiles wholesome values. It is nice that the author has written five more books and all the proceeds of one, go to a children’s charity in Ghana. This also, would be a pleasant part to discuss with children who read this book, as charity is a wonderful lesson to give a child. The books are written in English and Spanish, which is very useful to reach a wider audience.
The book doesn’t contain any profanity or adult themes, and I didn’t find any errors, so I believe it has been professionally edited. With Christmas coming, this would be a wonderful gift for any child and highlights the value of quality time with children.
