Official Review: The Big Adventures of Little Lucky
In The Big Adventures of Little Lucky by Paula Gehring-Kevish, young readers are introduced to a little, abandoned dog named Lucky. When his family moved away from the area, he was left behind to somehow survive in the sweltering summer heat of Las Vegas, Nevada. With very little accessible food or water, he had become quite malnourished, but his spirit never faltered. When a family comes along to offer him safe shelter and a new home, he soon learns what it is like to have (human and dog) siblings. He happily takes rides in trucks and makes trips to the local hardware store. One day, his tail suddenly stops wagging, and he requires significant time and physical therapy to recover from paralysis resulting from an implied spinal injury.
This 22-page children’s tale is book one of The Rescue series. Book two features the story of Gunner, Lucky’s future (dog) brother. Eleven pages of this title exhibit typed text on a woodgrain background. The other eleven pages feature full-page, colored illustrations. Once Lucky arrives at his new home, a dog collar with a personalized nametag appears on his neck. His collar complements the one his (dog) sister Gracie wears. This subtly sweet aspect was one of the things I enjoyed the most.
I will say that the illustrations succeed at visually supporting the accompanying text, but the overall illustration quality leaves a little something to be desired. The depictions of “wagging” tails resemble the open jaws of carnivorous Venus flytrap plants, and while fire hydrants do often appear in dog-related plots, one should not feasibly appear in any homeowner’s private backyard, situated immediately next to an in-ground swimming pool. I did appreciate the purposeful attention to regional detail though. Several desert plants made an appearance to represent the authentically arid environment.
I do feel this book would be appropriate for all children in the targeted reading age range of 5-9 years. The succinct sentences feature simple, straightforward, easy-to-follow terminology like “tummy rubs.” The author even utilizes the term “pet doctor” instead of the more complicated “veterinarian.” I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a rescue story with a happy ending. Themes of abandonment become second chances, and setbacks become successfully surmountable with a caring support system in place. Kids will broadly learn about the benefits of adopting, fostering, and rescuing homeless pets.
Due to some of the aforementioned points, I feel this book earns a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. I only encountered one minor grammatical error with a comma splice, so potential issues with the editing quality were of no concern. It is essential that children learn the concepts of compassion, kindness, and empathy early in life. Simple stories like this are a nice place to start.

This dog was fortunate to have a second chance at life through rescue and rehabilitation with a family that truly wanted him! I hope all children will have the chance to learn how important a loving home can be for those who’ve been abandoned.RetiredOBNurse wrote: ↑03 Dec 2020, 03:59 What a wonderful children’s book to read! I also feel that if the concepts you mentioned are introduced to a child early in their life, they will likely become an adult with qualities we all strive to exhibit in our everyday lives. I love the idea of choosing a “rescue” dog to become a member of the family as well. Thank you for the well written review of this story about a dog named Lucky!

Early-age empathy should most definitely be promoted and pursued. I wholeheartedly agree on that point. Thank you for your sweet words and positive feedback!
