Review by Kenesha L Fowler -- Love, Grandma by Ann Morris
Love, Grandma by Ann Morris is a picture book in which the author shares fond memories of time spent with her granddaughters. Told in rhyme, the story describes lots of fun, precious moments. From pony rides and dress-up to sleepovers and arts and crafts projects, each page teems with the love and enjoyment shared between a doting grandmother and her two adorable granddaughters.
What I liked most about the book was how relatable I found it. A few of the activities mentioned triggered some great childhood flashbacks of my own. I imagine the same can be said for many who read Love, Grandma. I also greatly appreciated the illustrations by David Gnass. Striking and colourful, they were as captivating and charming as the story itself. In fact, they depicted the narrative so well, (I believe) a child could enjoy the book on his own, even if he cannot read.
If pressed to find one thing I didn't like, my issue would be with the rhymes. While I generally liked them, I felt the rhythm was off in certain parts. This caused me to stumble over the words, unable to maintain my flow. Still, this was a minor issue that did not lessen my overall appreciation of the piece.
I am delighted to say I didn't find any errors, which, along with the superb arrangement of the illustrations, indicated a professional touch in the editing. My rating is 4 out of 4 stars.
This struck me as an immensely sweet endeavour undertaken by Morris in compiling her treasured memories and presenting them in this love letter of a book. I think it would make a perfect bedtime story and would recommend it for children of any age. Furthermore, I see no reason why it wouldn't be favourably received by parents and grandparents alike.
