[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Santosha Saves Bedtime" by Lauren Eastman.]
Santosha Saves Bedtime is a beautiful children’s book written by Lauren Eastman with illustrations by Shruti Prabhu. Little Blake is having trouble falling asleep. His imagination is working overtime, and he is seeing things in the shadows and hearing unsettling noises. A friendly spirit named Santosha floats through Blake’s window and teaches him a simple meditation technique to refocus his thoughts so he can relax and fall asleep.
This is a brief, peaceful story that is simple enough for young children to understand. Santosha teaches kids (and adults) an easy breathing technique to refocus the mind away from outside distractions. The story is told in an easy rhyming style. Santosha is a benevolent character who instills a sense of calm.
The illustrations are beautiful and brightly colored. The text stands out nicely against the background. I especially liked the picture of the ocean with the happy sea creatures, and the picture of the dancing leaves was a close second.
I believe that the book was professionally edited, as I found no errors in the text. There was nothing that I disliked about the story, and I am pleased to rate it four out of four stars.
Santosha Saves Bedtime is an excellent choice for helping children learn to relax and not be afraid of the dark. I suppose it would not be the right choice for people who believe that meditation is somehow blasphemous or ungodly or people who hate children’s books.
I wish I had heard a bedtime story like this as a child. Even as an adult I have some difficulty with nyctophobia. I tend to be hyper-aware of noises and my eyes play tricks on me, making the shadows seem malevolent. As I am trying to reduce my electric bill, I have placed small LED lights in the dining room and kitchen rather than leaving the dining room light on at night. Perhaps I would be wise to call on Santosha next time I start seeing threatening shapes in the shadows!
