When a new puppy, Thomas Woof, comes to live at a farm full of grumpy animals, it’s up to Max The Owl to solve the problem. The wise and very observant Max discovers the new puppy has a talent for telling stories, but the pup must learn to use his creative talent the right way. He can’t go around the farm writing his story ideas all over the other animals! What a naughty puppy!

Join the fun in Jane Owen’s cute and creative story, Tom Woof & Max The Owl. This book would be perfect for young readers who adore animal stories and love to write and share their own stories.

I enjoyed the lessons presented in this short 21-page children’s book. The author reveals to young readers the power that creative writing has in bringing people together and the positive influence that storytelling has in affecting the world around us. I also loved how the author used Max The Owl to illustrate a simple process for putting together a story and encouraging creativity.

The beautiful illustrations were another part of the book that I loved. I think children will enjoy the adorable farm animals, even when they make grumpy faces at each other. Poor little Tom Woof looked so innocent, though his nonsense scribbles all over the farm buildings and animals made him very unpopular. The angry eyebrows on the horses and sheep made me laugh! But not to worry, the animals solved their problems by the end of the story, and the peaceful resolution made for a satisfying conclusion.

The only thing I didn’t like about the book was the punctuation errors. I found less than ten, but additional editing would give the book a final polish that would make it shine. Independent readers will be able to finish the story without a problem, but adults reading to their kids might find the errors a little distracting. Therefore, I give the book three out of four stars. If you’ve got young storytellers in the family, Tom Woof’s story would be an excellent choice to introduce them to the writing process. You might even want to give your child a journal and a special pen to encourage them to jump right in and get their ideas on paper!

Sounds like a fun storytime read with a little writing project to go with it! I'm tucking this one into my shelves for just that. Thank you for a helpful review! I hope the next round of printing fixes the punctuation errors, especially in children's books that's a big pet peeve of mine.
