Official Review: Hatched in a Hole

Hatched in a Hole is a wonderfully educational children’s book by Lou Kelley-Kluchar, M.S., and B. Dean Kluchar, B.S. The authors are part-time wildlife photographers and avid birders from North Carolina.
The book tells the story of two pileated woodpecker chicks, a male and a female, who live in a hole in an old tree. The boy is named Pilley and the girl is Addy.
Along the way, the story educates the reader not only about Pilley and Addy but about other birds that they interact with. The woods are full of friendly birds, including other varieties of woodpeckers. However, there are also birds that the chicks must beware of, including hawks. The book discusses the way the birds communicate with each other, going silent when a predator is nearby.
The story is fun and educational. It is well-formatted with bold block text standing out against the colorful background. Children will learn to appreciate and respect nature as they develop a bond with the colorful characters in Pilley and Addy’s story.
I am many decades beyond childhood, and I learned several things about woodpeckers and other birds by reading this book. I was not aware that woodpeckers left their nests once their hatchlings were able to fly. I found that information fascinating, and I enjoyed learning about the way the different birds interact with each other.
There was nothing at all that I disliked about this book. The colorful pictures are beautiful, the story of Pilley and Addy is both entertaining and informative, and the text is bold and easy to read. The sounds that the birds make would be fun for children to imitate. The book is appropriate for helping children of all ages develop respect for animals and nature.
I found no errors in the text and, thus, believe that Hatched in a Hole is professionally edited. I give this beautiful book an enthusiastic four out of four stars.
