Review by leiabutler -- Love, Grandma by Ann Morris
Love, Grandma, is a heart-warming and engaging children's book about a grandma who is full of love for her two grandchildren. She loves doing everything with them. From playing, having sleepovers, and sorting through buttons! There are gorgeous illustrations by David Gnass to accompany the text and the illustrations and text pair very well together. Ann Morris is a grandma herself and reflects on her experience of the love she feels for her grandchildren.
This novel has a really warm and loving tone. This is because the activities explored in the book are activities Morris did with her own grandchildren. This means there is a really realistic quality to the book. The fact Morris has fragments of her own experiences into the book means that everything is very believable and gives the content a higher quality feel. I loved the inventiveness in some of the activities the children in the book explore with their grandma, and this could be a great book for giving grandma's ideas from the book that they can then implement in their lives.
Generally, the book is written in quite a simple language although there are a few instances where bigger words such as 'precious' are used. I think this book would work best being read to a child, or being read by an older child, as it is possible a younger child may struggle with a few words in the language. There is a really lovely rhyme throughout the story which adds a fun element to the read and which is another reason I think the book would best be read out loud. The only element of the book which came across as slightly confusing was the font used as sometimes the letter i and letter l looked the same. This would not be a problem for older readers however this is something that younger children may struggle with a little.
The book is a nice, easy, smooth and well-flowing story which is great for younger readers. Alongside it being very well-edited and written with no errors, it is a good length and will therefore be able to hold the attention of younger readers who may suffer from lower attention spans. It is a very engaging read, although the word 'grew' is slightly overused which throws the flow off just a little at times.
Overall I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is highly deserving of this rating because of the wonderful error-free story. This is the perfect book for a grandma looking for something to read to their grandchildren, or to buy for them to read as a present. This best would perhaps be best for girls, as the two children in the book are girls who do more feminine things such as try on their grandma's high heels.
