Review by Lucille27 -- Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a S...
Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat, by R.F. Kristi, is the seventh part of The Inca Cat Detective Series. Inca, the leader of the group, narrates their stories and mysteries through her diary. In this episode, the gang visits Sri Lanka. We follow the three cats (Inca, Fromage, and Cara) and the hamster (Charlotte) being on the beach and finding new friends. However, their peaceful holidays will change when a robbery takes place. Solo, her mom’s human friend, will visit them in Sri Lanka to investigate the crime, together with his dog Terrance. Inca, curious by nature, will try to help them in this new mystery.
What I like about this book is that it is quick-paced and has illustrations. The main plotline is the mystery of the robbed items. However, before we are introduced to this, we see the family of cats having fun at the beach. They meet animals from the place, such as turtles and elephants. I think this was a nice detail. Also, the book repeats some key information throughout the book. This tactic is very useful for kids.
What I dislike about this book is the rhythm. I really liked that there is not only one main story, but I think children might lose interest. The book presents a lot of minor details. Some of them are very interesting, but some others could have been omitted. I think the book has a lot of fun and adventurous moments, but these were mostly towards the end. Maybe if the beginning had been a bit shorter, it could captivate the attention of the kids in a better way.
The book was professionally edited, and I think I just found a couple of minor typos. I think this book does not go against anyone’s personal beliefs. I consider it teaches to respect the cultural differences through understanding and friendship. It does not present vulgar, offensive, or profane language, nor does it contain erotic scenes. It is suited for any audience, including children.
I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I consider it was short and sweet. Maybe I would give it a 3.5, personally, since I would have liked a better rhythm. I am worried about losing the children’s attention. However, this can be very subjective. I think the book works very well for children and young English-language learners. I found it very helpful since it includes brief sentences, new vocabulary, and images. I think it would be a fun approach to learn for young learners.
