Review by Momiji1987 -- Love, Grandma by Ann Morris
Love, Grandma by Ann Morris is a heartwarming story about a grandmother sharing unforgettable moments with her granddaughters. It is illustrated with adorable images by David Gnass. Grandma has many fond memories of playing with her grandchildren, feeding the birds, making tents, and viewing puppet shows. Payton and Haley have so much fun baking cookies, dancing, and doing backbends. Based on the author’s own memories, this book is a tribute to her grandchildren. This is a story full of nostalgia and love.
I really enjoyed this little book. It made me want to tear up near the end. The love the author expressed for her grandchildren was sweet and touching. This book is so relatable on many levels and will appeal to all ages. I also had similar memories with my grandmother and mom growing up. Since they’re no longer with me, it just deeply touched me to see so many of my own memories retold by the author. This book is both charming and endearing in every way. There’s really nothing negative I can say about it.
The author has many cherished recollections with Payton and Haley and even shares a funny, embarrassing event that happens towards the end. This book is short and appropriate for young readers, but also emotionally rich. I smiled through much of it, giggled in places, and cried at the end.
The book is written in rhyme and is accompanied on every page with pleasant illustrations created by David Gnass. His drawings are full color. Every picture brings to life the happy moments Grandma describes and matches the text perfectly. Grandma appears to be caucasian and her granddaughters bi-racial, which makes the book more inclusive to various ethnicities.
I didn’t see any errors or editing mistakes, so I happily rate this lovely little book 4 out of 4 stars. If you’re looking for a book to provide “the feels”, while also being a great story to share with your children, then this book is perfect for you. The author imbues every word with love and the artist matches her rhymes with perfect images of fun, laughter, and affection.
