Susie’s Shoes Go Missing by Susan Johnson is a cute story about a little girl and her cat, Pirate. This book is illustrated by Emily Call. Every day, Susie wakes up, and she finds only one shoe! With the help of her mischievous cat, Pirate, Susie reunites her missing shoes. This book is charmingly illustrated in full color. Additionally, it teaches children all about prepositions.

This book is really cute in its physical copy. I received a soft cover version that is very light and easy to flip through. It’s shaped like a large square, and it contains beautiful illustrations that fill every page. The verses are in rhyme, and the text is also attractive. I really liked that the prepositions were written in bold font to assist children with reading. This style choice also makes it easier for educators to demonstrate the prepositions.

One area I thought the author missed the mark slightly was in the lack of adding Saturday and Sunday to the days of the week. This book could also be used as a tool to teach children all the names of the days of the week, but the book concludes with Friday. Other than that, I enjoyed the story and its presentation very much. I also like that the last page has mini illustrations of Pirate the cat performing the prepositions. The author gives parents and teachers a few exercises to aid children with learning the prepositions by saying which one the cat is doing. It was clear and rendered very nicely on the page.

I really have nothing negative to say about the book. I didn’t see any errors or grammar problems. The story was relatable. Susie tried to find shoes to play in the rain, go out, stay home, or attend ballet. Children who love cats will especially enjoy this story. It’s both fun and educational, and it is a book I would have really liked when I was learning to speak and to read. Other than leaving out the weekend, I found the book to be funny, cute, charming, and adorable. The illustrations bring out interesting colors. The characters’ personalities really shine and reflect the prose in their expressions. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.

Anyone looking for a book that makes learning prepositions fun and easy should give this little gem a try. The characters are likable, and the art is colorful and pleasant to behold. I recommend this book to parents, teachers, and children. It would be excellent for a bedtime story or later on as a beginner book for new readers.
