Courageous Cal is a children’s book written by Candace Barbaccia and illustrated by Joseph Barbaccia. The story’s heroine is a shy chameleon named Cal. Cal lives on an island called Hidden Haven with numerous colorful creatures. The island is only visible one day out of every 100 years.

Cal is disappointed because she blends in rather than standing out like her colorful companions. The wise old owl advises her that everyone is special in their own way, but Cal doesn’t feel special.

One day, a pair of pirates come to Hidden Haven to capture the creatures that live there. Most of the creatures are easily spotted and taken prisoner. However, the pirates are unable to see Cal because she blends in. It is now up to Cal to save the day.

The story is well-written, and the book’s colorful illustrations are a perfect accompaniment for the tale. The text stands out well against the background. I believe that the book was professionally edited as I found no errors in the text.

Children in modern society are exposed from a young age to judgmental attitudes regarding appearance. In a celebrity-focused culture, those who don’t have “star qualities” tend to be viewed as lesser. We live in a world where everyone is encouraged to seem exceptional, particularly where physical appearance is concerned.

Those who have an ordinary appearance tend to be overlooked, and those who don’t have an outgoing personality may develop an inferiority complex because we blend into the background as Cal does. The book encourages young readers and adults alike to realize that even those who “blend in” have gifts to offer.

I give Courageous Cal four out of four stars. There was nothing that I disliked about the book. The simple, encouraging story is appropriate for children of all ages. Books like this one can help counter the constant barrage of messages telling kids that they are not enough if they are not the prettiest, the most popular, and the best at everything.

The idea of a chameleon that does not want to blend in is creative. It fits the message of the story. Thanks for the recommendation.
