Ava Flips by Ava Nebel is a cute and lively children’s story about Ava, a young girl who likes to do her gymnastic flips all over the house. She flips and flips, even flipping over the family dog, Rover. Finally, she falls and bumps her head, but this will not stop her for long. She wants to perform more acrobatic tricks again soon.

Ava Nebel’s first writing attempt is an impressive feat for someone so young. She is seven years old and lives in Westchester, New York, with her parents. She loves her dance school, where she studies dance and acrobatics.

My favorite parts of the story are the beautiful full-page illustrations. Every other page has a bright, colorful picture of the adorable Ava doing her tricks. A large, bold, easy-to-read font is used throughout the story. Ava’s gleeful facial expressions express her love of gymnastics. Even when she falls, she looks determined to try again.

Ava Flips is a short book, with only twenty pages and half are in pictures. I wish the author had made the story longer, adding more rhyming places Ava likes to flip. It is so delightful; I wanted to read more. Although it is professionally edited, I did discover one grammatical error on the last page.

The story is fun and upbeat, with rhyming and rhythmic lines. It is the perfect book for beginning readers ages four through eight years. I think it will be especially appealing to young girls and to all kids who attend gymnastic classes. Parents should tell their children Ava is trained in gymnastics and encourage them to do their flips outside to avoid getting hurt. Maybe, they will want to take classes and learn to flip like Ava.

I encourage Ava Nebel to continue her writing career, as she is off to a brilliant start. Because of the charming story, fun rhyming text, and brightly-colored pictures, I am awarding Ava Flips by Ava Nebel 4 out of 4 stars.
