Thunder and Lightning, They’re Not So Frightening by JD Schmith is a bedtime story to help kids get over their fear of storms. William is a little boy who loves to look out his window before going to sleep. Unfortunately, a big storm is coming this night, which makes little William afraid. He quickly ducks under the covers to hide and is comforted by his dad, who begins to explain what’s actually happening when it thunders, rains, and the skies produce lightning.

This story was so adorable. I really loved the way the illustrations mixed digital art with the photographs of the little boy and his daddy. I’m generally not afraid of storms these days, but the author captured what it’s like to be a child who doesn’t understand what’s going on. It took me back to a time when I was younger and scared of storms because I’d been through a tornado. It took me a while to realize most storms will not be that dangerous, so I like that the author helped convey that through this story.

I read another review that complimented the author for using real science to describe what happens when it thunders. I’d also like to compliment the author for making the story interesting and not overly simplistic. The models that play William and Daddy are also great. Their photos help tell the story well, and I liked that they were airbrushed to match the illustrations.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The editing was excellent. I didn’t see any typos. I enjoyed the story and how it was presented, so it deserves to receive the highest marks.

Parents whose children fear storms should definitely get this book. It will be a good teaching aid to help children understand and be less scared of bad weather. If you don’t like a well-told children’s story with cute pictures, then this book won’t be for you. Even if your kids aren’t afraid of storms, I recommend this book because it’s a good story.

This is a wonderful book for children and for parents. The illustrations sound amazing. It's helpful that the author added simple scientific facts for the readers to start building a foundation of information about weather. Great review!

"I really loved the way the illustrations mixed digital art with the photographs of the little boy and his daddy." I enjoyed that too and when I first saw William, the realism threw me because the backgrounds are simplistic.
