J.D. Schmith is the author of an excellent children's book called Thunder and Lightning: They're Not So Frightening. She is also a mother of two young children, which is what inspired her to write this book to explain thunder and lightning to young children. As a parent, I can certainly understand wanting to find a way to comfort your children in the middle of a scary thunderstorm.

In this book, the main character is a little boy named William. Every night before going to sleep William enjoys looking out the window of his bedroom. One night he is looking out his window when a thunderstorm begins. He worries that the noise of the storm and bright lights will be able to get to him in his room. His father is able to explain what causes thunder and lightning so that William can enjoy the storm and go back to sleep.

I enjoyed seeing the pictures that came along with this book. Each one was mostly artwork except for the faces of William and his father, which were photos. I assume that they are photos of the author's husband and son. The book was professionally well edited. I didn't see any spelling or grammar errors in the book.

I rate Thunder and Lightning: They're Not So Frightening with 4 out of 4 stars. There aren't many books out there written for young children to ease their fears about storms. According to the author, that is what actually inspired her to write the book - she couldn't find a book like it and so she decided to write it for other parents and children.

My favorite things about this book were how it is perfect for young children. It takes a complex process and explains it in age-appropriate terms. There was honestly nothing about this book that I didn't enjoy. It was a pleasurable read for me. I would recommend this book for young children and parents of young children looking for a way to ease their fears about thunderstorms. I certainly wish that when my son was younger there would have been a book like this out there to help explain storms and help him relax.
