Review by Nisha Ward -- Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a ...
Hi! It’s cat time! I really love cats, you know. They’re such cool, luxurious animals, and reading about adventures that feature them is always a pleasure.
Having read Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula, I decided to check out another one of the Inca Cat Detective books, and I was thrilled with it! Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is actually the seventh book in the series. It’s a delightful, standalone mystery that’s filled with danger and adventure in spades!
Inca, our intrepid heroine, has found herself flying to Sri Lanka with her siblings Cara and Fromage, and their owner Missy. Between new friends and wild jungle adventures, Inca finds herself embroiled in the mysterious theft of an antique sword and gold coins. Can she crack the case, or will it prove too much for our favourite feline and her friends?
This was a pretty cool children’s book, if I may say so. Between the art, the animals and the story, I was completely entertained. There’s something to be said about the unique and colourful illustrations that are included, the animals emoting in fun and interesting ways. I loved this as it gave me something pretty and amusing to look at during key points of the book.
I also liked the personalities of the cats. Cara’s vanity and Fromage’s rebellious nature are highlighted without making them dislikeable, while Inca’s perpetual curiosity and protectiveness gets her into quite a pickle in the jungle. I really did fear for her life during her encounter with a leopard and her cubs, not to mention other parts of the book.
However, I didn’t like how the book ended. While the mystery was wrapped up, I didn’t like how far it didn’t go. I think there was room for the villains to face more consequences. As it were, not all the questions presented were answered to my satisfaction.
Still, it’s a pretty decent book that kids under 9 will appreciate. I really loved it and even with the handful of errors I found, I’m giving it 4 out of 4 stars. Read it with your kids. They’ll love it.
