Official Review: The Druid Twins by Adam P Maxted
The Druid Twins by Adam P Maxted is a children’s fantasy novel that revolves around the adventures of the twin brother and sister, Brianna and Reagan, and their quest to save Britain from the evil power of the Demon King, Balor. It is a tale of two precocious children with special magical powers who live with their mother and lead a safe, but ordinary life. However, due to the rising evil of Balor, they go on a heroic adventure and transform into saviours.
This is a wonderfully structured novel with a rich narrative. It explores central themes, commonly found in children’s literature, such as friendship, betrayal, leadership, heroism, family, and kinship. Through the two protagonists, Brianna and Reagan, the author expertly represents how children grapple with power and agency. The two learn to assume responsibility, overcome self-importance, and become leaders in their own right. Like a heroic quest in any fantasy novel, their quest is full of a range of magical characters, be it fairies, nymphs, or nature gods, who assist them. Moreover, the journey serves as a site of reflection and self-knowledge that enhances their life experiences.
What I liked about the novel is the relationship between Brianna and Reagan. While they may live in a magical world, the bond between the two is akin to any sibling bond. They fight and make it up, and will do everything in their power to protect each other. Secondly, the friendships they form individually with other characters in the novel, be it Violet, Duckweed, Vevali, or Kyan, give the readers more insight into their lives. Thirdly, their relationship with adult authority figures, such as their mother, Galen, and Vendar, is not one-dimensional or hierarchical. They have a chance to make their own decisions and learn from their mistakes.
My main concern with this novel is that it is not carefully proofread or edited. There are several errors throughout the novel, and it will be great if the novel can be professionally edited.
Overall, I give this novel 2 out of 4 stars. There are too many grammatical and editing errors that stop the reader from enjoying the tale. That said, it is a wonderful novel that beautifully depicts an ancient magical world along with the adventures of Brianna and Reagan. As the novel ends on a cliff-hanger, I would love to read more of their subsequent adventures. I recommend it to children and young adults who love fantasy and adventure.
