Official Review: A Father's Love by Gerald L Jackson
A Father’s Love is a book for young children written by Gerald L. Jackson. Penned as a follow-up to his previous work, A Father’s Message, this slim volume is written as a message from a father to his daughter.
The book doesn’t have a story in any real sense. Instead, it takes the form of advice from a father to his child. The father’s love is expressed in words of encouragement and validation as the little girl in the pictures grows with the turning of the pages. There are four lines of verse written on each inside page, framed within a colored border, with an illustration on the outside page. The lines uphold the importance of education, of being honest, and of being true to one’s own values.
I liked the fact that this slim little book has been produced to an exceptionally high standard. From the glossy cover to the way it is set out inside, the book is a quality production throughout. Young children will love the consistency of how text and pictures are laid out, as they will know what to expect every time they turn the page. I was also captivated by Lorena Soriano’s beautiful illustrations. Her drawings are brightly colored and expertly crafted. They are drawn in a Disney or anime style, with emphasis given to the characters’ large eyes and small mouths, which adds to the cuteness factor of the little girl and her companions.
The sentiments expressed by the text are heartwarming, but I was a little disappointed by the loose rhythm of some of the lines. A consistent rhyme and rhythm structure makes verse easier for kids to remember and recite. That’s why you can still remember those nursery rhymes long after you’ve left childhood. The verses mostly follow a rhyme or half-rhyme scheme in an ABCB pattern, but the rhythm is a bit more irregular.
I am deducting one star for that, giving a score of 3 out of 4 stars. The book is exceptionally well edited, and I found no errors or grammatical mistakes. I recommend it to parents wanting to read their young child a bedtime story. The beautiful illustrations also make it suitable for young children to pick up and read on their own.
