[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Shaggy Jaggy" by Julia Irwin.]
Shaggy Jaggy is a children's book written by Julia Irwin. It is about a little girl who loves her hair and enjoys doing different things with it each day. The little girl likes knowing what to expect her hair to be like. She doesn't believe it will ever change.
Shaggy Jaggy is a little girl who loves her hair. She likes wearing hats. She likes using bows. She loves when her hair is in curls. One day, she realizes how much her hair has grown and she no longer loves it. Shaggy Jaggy isn't happy about how her hair has changed. It's off to the hairdresser to see if she will be able to love it again.
This book is geared towards younger children. Younger children will enjoy either reading the book or listening to it as an adult reads it to them. It wouldn't be suitable for older children as it would be under their reading comprehension.
I thought this book was a cute way to help children realize that change isn't always a bad thing. It teaches children to grow by letting go of staying in their comfort zone. Shaggy Jaggy believes she can only be happy with how here hair is, but she realizes she can be happy with it long, short, in curls, or with a hat. I feel the message is a really positive one for children. I also enjoyed how the author used rhymes to tell the story. The rhymes made it whimsical and fun to read. I didn't find anything to dislike about this book.
I rated this book 4 out of 4 stars. It appears to be professionally edited and contains no errors. It is a simple story geared towards younger children. It helps children to embrace change instead of resisting it. The story is well-written. The pictures add to the storyline and provide a colorful visualization for the reader. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to those with younger children.
