Shadow is a beloved cat with a curious mind and love of bird watching. After moving with his owners, Shadow finds himself enthralled with all the birds he can watch from the many windows of his new house. One day, Shadow sees a bird through an open door and goes to investigate, which leads him out into the world where he finds himself lost. Will Shadow ever find his way home? Find out in Kathy Kovar’s Shadow’s Adventure Home.

My favorite aspect of the book pertains to the colored pencil illustrations, which are visually appealing with bright colors and intricate patterns. Children will love the drawings of Shadow and other animals as he goes on his adventure. I loved that the main character is an adventurous cat, especially because this story is relatable to cat owners like myself.

Additionally, the book is well-written and can be easily understood by young readers. I found no typographical or grammatical errors throughout the book, which is important for children as they learn to properly read and write. The font is a larger size to help children follow along easier.

My only criticism is that some pages contain too many words for readers of kindergarten age and younger. They may find reading this book daunting or may get lost as they try to read line after line. Otherwise, I have absolutely no issues with this book and think it is a lovely children’s story.

My rating of Shadow’s Adventure Home is 4 out of 4 stars. The story is intriguing, and the illustrations are eye-catching. I recommend this book to readers ages three to eight, though the younger readers will likely need to have this book read to them. There are 28 pages of text and illustrations, not including the cover, about page, and title page. This is a children’s book for readers who love animals and colorful illustrations.
