Shadow’s Adventure Home, by Kathy Kovar, is a charming true story about a cat and his family. The illustrations by Mardel Rubio are delightful and add to the charm of the book.

Shadow is a busy cat, but he has always had his eye on one thing: birds. He watches them from his window all day long and dreams big dreams about catching a few someday. But living in the city makes it hard for him to catch any without going outdoors, which is difficult since he spends his days inside.

One day, Shadow begins noticing his family putting their stuff into boxes and while he loves playing with the boxes as they are getting packed, he isn’t so excited when his things are packed away. Shadow and his family are moving to the country where they will have plenty of room to run and play. When Shadow accidentally leaves his new house through an open door, he spots a bird and chases it far from his new home. He eventually loses track of the bird. He then realizes that he is lost and must do his best to find his way back to his family!

Anyone who has ever lost a pet will take some comfort in knowing that as they search for their furry family members, their furry family member is doing the same. Readers with an affinity for cats will want to grab this book as Shadow's story is something that they can relate too. Through a fortunate turn of events, we get some insight into what it means when trying to find your way home and how important perseverance really is.

Narrative is the primary storytelling method of this book, but dialogue sprinkles in some variety. Through descriptive language and imagery readers get a clear sense of Shadow's moods even though cats cannot talk to humans in real life! The illustrations are colored pencil sketches with an emotional depth provided by lines of pencil to make it feel like you're following him on his journey through this two-dimensional world.

This story would be best suited to elementary school-aged children with longer attention spans. I enjoyed reading this story and I give it a 4 out of 4 stars.
