In Maggie and Friends: Animal Adventure, the reader is introduced to an upbeat hippo named Maggie. Maggie loves to learn about other animals and wants nothing more than to teach children about all the animals around the world. When she tells her parents her dream, they take her on an adventure to understand more about different creatures. In the end, Maggie just might have the chance to take the children on a wild learning expedition with the help of her friends.

This book was a very cute read for children. The author, Nancy Nilson, did a great job coming up with an interesting storyline. I enjoyed reading about Maggie trudging through the jungle on her journey to following her dreams. I think this book sends a great message to children about going after their own goals. In addition, the illustrations really add to the story by bringing the reader more into the moment. I believe many kids tend to love looking at pictures of animals and pointing out different ones while reading. All of these aspects make this book a fun learning opportunity for kids!

I really liked the idea behind this storyline and think that children would enjoy this book. However, I felt that the actual execution of the storyline was somewhat lacking. I think that Maggie’s journey needs to be more fleshed out and have some added detail. In addition, the book went from one moment to the next in an almost disorganized fashion at times. For instance, the author all of a sudden hopped from Maggie visiting the jungle with her family to Maggie telling children what she had learned about other animals. I think it would have flowed much better if there had been more detail about her trip to the jungle and more of a transition from one event to the next.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. I think it is a great idea and would definitely capture the attention of children. This book is also a learning opportunity for children about the world and following your dreams. However, the storyline would benefit from more detail and that is why I will not give the book a 3 or 4 star rating. To be fair, though, I would certainly give the book 2.5 stars if that were possible. I think the idea from the author deserves a higher rating but that the book is not quite at 3 stars.

If you are somebody who has children that enjoy fun animal adventures, then I would recommend this book to you. If you are somebody who has children that are not into animals, then I would not recommend this book to you.
