Review of Thunder and Lightning, They're Not So Frightening
Thunder and Lightning, They’re Not So Frightening by JD Schmith is about a little boy named William. William and his family live in a house on a hill that overlooks the nearby town. Every night as he prepares himself for sleep, William likes to sit on his bed and watch the lights come on in the neighboring houses below.
But this night is different from all the rest. On this night, dark clouds begin rolling in as the trees twist and turn in the wind. William knows tonight will bring a storm. Unfortunately, he is scared by the sound of thunder. At the first loud rumble, he yells for his Daddy. His Daddy comes to the rescue and explains the science behind thunder and lightning. Much calmer, William settles down and goes to sleep for the night.
I found the illustrations within this book quite stunning. They were so realistic that it was like I was looking at a photograph instead of a drawing made for a children’s book. I also appreciated how scientifically the information on how lightning and thunder are developed was laid out. When I was a child, I was told that thunder was the sound of God bowling and that the lightning came from a strike. Even as a child, this never made any sense to me. I would have preferred the information to be laid out to me as succinctly as this book lays it out.
I found no fault with this book during my read. I appreciated every aspect, especially how well the author managed to pass along a great description of how thunder and lightning are formed. I did not even find any errors, so I believe this book to be professionally edited.
This book deserves a full-star review, so I am giving it 4 out of 4 stars. It is a great piece of work and is quite informative in a very simplistic way that most children should be able to comprehend. The illustrations themselves were also quite engaging and should hold the attention of a young child even if the words themselves do not.
It is for that reason that I recommend this story to all young children, especially those with a fear of storms. I am uncertain that parents will be able to find a better means of conveying the information within this book to their children. This book hits all the right notes.
